Description:
Most modern explosion proof lighting includes LED technology that reduces cost and improves the durability of the lighting fixture in a hazardous lighting location. Unlike standard industrial LED lighting fixtures, explosion proof LED lighting will have stronger frame and housings and thicker, tempered glass lenses. Any internal electrical systems that might produce sparks will be more tightly contained to separate any sparks from flammable vapors, dusts, or fibers in the environment. The objective standards for rating explosion proof lighting will indicate exactly what type of hazardous lighting location will match a specific fixture.
For example, an explosion proof LED lighting fixture with a Class I Division 1 designation will be safe for installation in an environment with flammable vapors that are frequently or periodically present in the atmosphere around the fixture. A Class I Division 2 lighting fixture will be safe for installation in areas where vaporous substances are held or transported in storage vessels but are not necessarily in the atmosphere. Group designations within each Class and Division refer to the ignition temperatures and explosive pressures of the actual flammable substances that might be released into the atmosphere. An atmosphere in which acetylene is common, for example, where acetylene welding processes are used, would have a Class I Division 1 Group A designation because of the higher ignition and explosive risks posed by acetylene. A facilities manager or designer would need to select explosion proof LED lighting with the same Class I Division 1 Group A designation to safely illuminate that environment.
